My Students
We need lots and lots of books! All I heard from my students last year was “But I read this already three times!” My students are voracious readers with an appetite for reading but with the recent budget cuts they won’t have new books to read that will keep them interested in reading.
I am a first grade teacher teaching in a in a low-income neighborhood.
My school is composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children’s experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to help their children with schoolwork. Moreover, my students have challenges learning English compounding an already difficult and frustrating situation at home.
My Project
As you know, these are the crucial years of a child’s life when they are learning important literacy skills that will serve as the building blocks of their academic life. We need to offer options to our students to sustain their interest in reading. If schools lack books, a very basic need for all students, then how can our children improve and grow. How can they love reading? I would like to fill my library with high-interest books that would keep my students interested in reading. Donors Choose has always helped me tremendously in filling my library with high-interest books. As a result, most of my students (past and present) have unearthed a love for reading. Furthermore, it has strengthened their literacy skills. High-interest books pertaining to a child’s life and interests has proved to improve reading skills in my classroom.
First grade is a very crucial year to introduce children to the joys of reading and what better way than to capture their interest by offering them books they want to read while improving their literacy skills.
Donors Choose has always made it possible for me to fill my classroom library with an abundance of books. Please continue to support this cause knowing that you are making an impact on the lives of my current and future students.
