No Matter the Weather, We will Build Leak Proof Homes!
My students need an iPad, building blocks, InstaSnow, tornado maker, weather books, planting materials, block table and construction paper.

My Students
"Give children the opportunity (and time) to explore their own ideas and think things through, even if their answers may seem far fetched." (-Hedda Sharapan). My students are excited to explore and simulate different types of weather to learn how it can impact plants and homes!
Every spring, we dive into a fun and interactive weather unit.
They learn about various types of weather through books, short videos and experiments and discover how weather can affect plants. Over a two week period, we will track the weather to discover weather patterns and make various observations. We will also observe plant life and how the weather affects its growth.
They will work with small groups to simulate different types of weather. After working in groups to explore these types of weather, they will create their own weather book to illustrate various types of weather. Once understanding how storms work, they will work as a group to build a leak proof home. As a final culmination, each student will create a short video using the iPad to report any type of weather of their choosing.
My Project
The weather books will be used throughout our weather study. Throughout the unit, we will track the weather and observe how the weather can affect plants' growth. They will simulate: tornadoes, rain, wind and snow. The tornado maker, InstaSnow, yarn, magnifying glasses and petrolatum will allow my students to explore these types of weather. They will illustrate about weather in their weather journals.
Once they have learned about the types of weather they will work in small groups to build a structure that will not leak. Each group will choose their materials (blocks, MagnaTiles, bamboo & logs) to create their structure. They will test their building using the watering can and brick people to check that each "person" stayed dry. If a person gets wet they will go back to continue to construct until their building is leak proof! At the end of this unit, they will use the iPad to become a weather reporter to report important weather information to their viewers!
We know weather is unpredictable but by having these materials, I can ensure that my students will investigate each type of weather during this project.
This unit could spark a love for engineering to build structurally safe homes or to become a weather reporter to keep viewers safe or a scientist to continue to learn and research about various topics.
