My Students

Were you one of those children who delighted in knock-knock jokes and awful puns? Did you read everything you could find in this genre? This year, a number of my library students are like that, but they are constantly disappointed by the slim pickings in the library's joke section.

I am the librarian at an elementary school located in a community plagued by poverty and violence.

This is the fourth year the library has been open. My library is the only source of books for my students, as gang activities prevent them from visiting the public library a mile from here. Our students are struggling to improve their reading scores. Finding books in the library that they truly want to read greatly encourages readers to practice reading. DonorsChoose has been instrumental in helping me create a collection that the students are eager to read, and the students are highly aware that we get books through grants. My avid readers constantly ask me if we have any new books and suggest books that we "should" get.

My Project

A group of boys has exhausted my meager supply of joke books and have specifically asked me to request new ones for them. Playing with language through jokes and riddles improves comprehension, creative thinking, writing ability, and general literacy. My young readers don't know all that - for them these books are simply fun. There's a social aspect to these books, as well, when students read pages out loud to each other and quiz each other about the riddles. Reading improves when students spend time reading. My students will spend a lot of time with these joke and riddle books.

They will want to read every book. Fluency will improve as they read out loud and reread their favorite bits multiple times. Students' understanding of the way language works will improve as well as they savor puns and other wordplay. By providing the books my students have been requesting, you will encourage them to keep reading, thus developing the skill they most need for success in life.
