I am a much better music teacher than a juggler. No matter how many times I try to play the banjo, keep the beat on a drum, and sing, all while holding up poster of the sheet music for the song we are learning, I always end up dropping something.
Our school is a growing Title I charter school in its second year of existence.
We currently serve Kindergarten through third grade. My students never fail to impress me with their musical energies. They can do amazing things, and, unlike me, they probably could juggle while playing music. But I would rather stick to my specialty, and save the juggling for someone else to teach!
My Project
All of my students are learning to read music. When students have independent time to practice their music reading skills we use several different instruments (including the two xylophones I am so lucky to have, thanks to DonorsChoose.org!). I want to provide music stands for my students to use during this practice time. If they have stands to hold their music in an easy to see location, they can focus on music-making, rather than trying to juggle xylophone mallets and sheet music.
These music stands will also be the beginning of a much bigger collection we will need when our school starts a band program next year (when students reach 4th grade).
I meet so many adults who tell me, "I wish I knew how to read music." Being able to read music opens up many musical possibilities.
I am excited to give all my students a broad foundation on which they can build any musical future they can imagine.
