My Students
Our program serves children who are identified as at risk and children with identified disabilities or delays. My classroom currently is a mixture of children who are 3 and 4 years old. I have a very diverse group of students in my room - socioeconomically, ethnicity, English Language Learners and ability level.
For most of my students, this is the first time they are away from home for an extended time each day.
I pride myself in creating a safe and comfortable environment for my little ones to grow and bloom.
I believe very strongly that play is the way the children in my classroom learn best. I also strongly believe that early intervention is the key to success for the children in my classroom. We spend the vast majority of our day exploring and playing. Of my 15 students, 11 are expected to move on to kindergarten in the Fall.
My Project
The world of preschoolers is full of giving time warnings. "We have 5 minutes left to play!" "3 minutes until we go inside!" But, most of the time my 3 - 5 year olds don't have the understanding of what "5 minutes" means. Because of that, we use many visuals or concrete examples of how much time is remaining. I have used Time-Timers in the past... little clocks with a red count down showing how much time is left. Unfortunately, they have broken as they are not very sturdy to stand up to the use required of a preschool classroom. Frequently, I'll also say, "We'll all take one more loop around the track then it's time to go inside." That will work but it is not giving them a reference of the time it will take. I am by no means teaching how to tell time in my classroom, none of us are developmentally ready for that life skill! But, I am giving them the chance to understand that 10 minutes is much longer than 2 minutes.
These timers that I'm requesting from this project will give us a visual representation of what 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes looks like.
I am also requesting some small fidget toys and sensory processing tools to help them stay occupied while they are counting down their wait time. When I was using the old timers I would frequently use them to count down time that one child had to finish a preferred activity before another child stepped in. Having small hand fidget toys will make that wait time easier to tackle while waiting for a preferred activity.
