My Students

I had an incredible batch of students this previous year, and while I have not yet met my students for the coming year, I am hoping to have a similar experience with them. My experiences with students have been incredible because they have been student-centered and highly-engaging. The types of things I like to do with my students when we are reading a novel is reading the text aloud, performing the text aloud in costume/role-playing, hosting mock trials to put a character/writer in the "hot seat," facilitating socratic seminars and class discussions on current events related to the text, creating artwork, poetry, and prose in response to a text, etc. My students have excelled at all of these activities, and we have had SO much fun doing them, that I hope to repeat a lot of these great activities with my new students!!

My Project

I plan on using the No Fear Shakespeare books to teach "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to ALL of my students. In our district, this is considered an advanced text; however, EVERY student will be expected to read at least one Shakespearean play per school year in high school. As 8th grade is such a crucial time in preparing students for high school, I would like to expose them to Shakespeare as soon as possible! I typically start by teaching students how to decode the text and we spend a good deal of time translating Shakespeare into modern language; however, for some kiddos, this doesn't click, and they are unable to get into the character development, the complicated plot, and the humor underlying the entire play!

By making Shakespeare's language accessible to all my students, I will not only help to prepare them for other challenging texts they will encounter in high school, such as "Romeo and Juliet," "Hamlet" or "Othello," I will also help to teach them how to appreciate the fine arts and to how to find humor in otherwise "boring" and "difficult" texts.

I enjoy using this particular book to teach irony, specifically situational irony, as well as gender roles and expectations. While reading about the confusing love "quadrangle" as my past students called it, I liken the drama that enfolds to something we would encounter on social media now, or that we would have seen on the Jerry Springer or Dr. Phil show a few years ago, as these both hinged on the unpredictable, which is what situational irony is all about--you expect one thing to happen and instead something entirely different happens. By keeping the story relevant to my students, they will learn to love Shakespeare!
