My Students
Remember the first time you read Shakespeare in high school? Remember the confusing language that made you dread going to English class? Well, my 9th graders need your help to ease their fears of reading Shakespeare for the first time.
Frederick Douglass Academy is a college preparatory school in Harlem.
We pride ourselves in graduating students who believe in Frederick Douglass's words "without struggle there is no progress." We are a Tittle 1 school with students from all over the city, many who will be the first in their families to attend college.
My Project
As the school year comes to a close my students are going to tackle Shakespeare. Unfortunately, like so many students and adults, my 9th graders are afraid to read Shakespeare because of language barriers and unknown vocabulary. With your donation, we will be able to purchase No Fear Shakespeare texts of Romeo and Juliet that puts Shakespeare's language side-by-side with a facing-page translation into modern English.
Your donation will allow my students to take ownership in reading and analyzing Romeo and Juliet.
This kind of accomplishment will set them up to feel confident when reading all other Shakespearean and college preparatory texts.
