This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
On the very first week of school, one of my students turned to me and asked, "You don't have any reading books?" I did not, and I still don't. My high school sophomores, if this is their only ELA class, are not in a place that allows them to explore literature other than what is available in their class textbooks.
Studies show that independent reading improves comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and achievement overall.
Students should have access to independent reading books that are reflective of their interests. Unfortunately, libraries are not the safe havens they used to be and many students avoid them. Not every student loves to read, but I want those of my students who do to have access to some good reads.
I would like to build a great classroom library for my students to give them the opportunity to enjoy stories the same way I did when I was in school.
