My Students

Children need to master basic math facts in order to be successful in math throughout school. If a child struggles to memorize and apply these facts, they will continue to have difficulty because most math skills build on previously learned information.

I teach at a small, rural Title I school.

My students range in age from nine to fourteen. I teach math to six classes of awesome fifth and sixth graders. The students enjoy our interactive learning environment and enjoy the experience of school. Some of my students still struggle with their basic math facts which takes away from their focus on understanding the math concepts we are learning. The average per capita income for my county is $17,225. The poverty rate in my county in 2008 was 21.5%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2008 was 13.2% (U.S. Census Bureau). With today's economy I am sure that the statistics are even more daunting. Approximately eighty percent of my students receive free or reduced price lunch.

My Project

I am requesting a Kindle Fire so that my students may access the many apps that will help them to master their basic multiplication and division facts. Consistent drill, in a fun manner, will speed their mastery of the facts. I am also requesting counters, dice, fraction games and the book, "Bullying in Schools". Children with low self-esteem are more likely to be bullied or be a bully. My hope is that by working hard to improve their skills, and therefore their self-esteem, we will be moving closer to eliminating bullying in schools.

This project is important to me because children that struggle with basic facts tend to continue to fall further and further behind each year.

Providing these students with new materials that will help them master their basic facts will help them not only academically but also socially. I know that these children can be successful; I want them to know that they can be successful. When that happens, the sky will be the limit.
