Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a mid to low social economic school, in a community where parents work many hours to provide for their children. Some of these students don't see their parents that much, during the week, which makes it hard for them to learn those social norms that their parents try to teach them. Board games is a fun way for students to practice those social norms with their peers. Board games help students figure out how to share with one another, how to ask questions and make polite statements, and how to work together with others! Plus, board games are a fun way to learn content, making it easy for students, and they don't realize they are learning!
My Project
Board games are a great way to learn content. Using games like Farkel will help my third graders practice adding within 1,000. It is a fun way for them to learn without them even knowing it! There are a variety of games that will get them to practice different content. Evolution shows them different characteristics of animals and what they need in order to survive. For my ESL learners, I have games like Boggle that will help them recognize words and Codenames that build a student's vocabulary.
Everyone remembers a lesson from a teacher who made it into a game and made it fun!
That is what providing these games will do for the students. I have specifically picked games that will help students in math, science, vocabulary, and reading. Board games provide experience for students to practice skills that are learned in all of these content areas. Today's learners learn in fast pace situations, and in scenarios that are constantly changing. I want to make education a fun learning experience that they will remember for a life time.
