This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Here at our school, we service a population of students ranging from the ages of 3 to 22. Our students are low-functioning and medically fragile with severe intellectual disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This prevents them from attending a school with the general population due to health and safety concerns.

All of our students would greatly benefit from having a place in which they are able to unwind or to release some frustration or energy.

Using sports and hands-on equipment, our students would have the opportunity to use this designated area to assist them throughout the day. Our plan is to build NKC City Recreational Center. A child-size representation of a metropolis where students can participate in different sports, physical education, life skills, and recreational activities.

Due to the nature of the medical fragility of our population, recreational activities must be held indoors. The area that will be transformed will be an adaptable space tailored to the specific needs of the students, providing therapeutic benefits and promoting overall well-being. Exercise equipment will assist in enhancing their fine and gross motor skills to achieve modified physical activity. We plan on having an adaptive physical recreation space composed of numerous exercise equipment and indoor sports materials, including balance beams, dance mats, kid-size rowing machine and a Putting set. This will be a haven in which the medically fragile and significantly disabled and cognitively disabled students of all ages are able to exercise their entire bodies in various forms. We will have different equipment that can be accommodated and accessible to ensure that all our students will be able to exercise and utilize their NKC City Recreational Center to maximize physical education at our Educational Center. This is the second step of several phases to make this haven a reality for our students.
