Night Sky, Illuminated.

My students need these materials to embroider the night sky's constellations using the LED lights to represent the main star(s) and produce a hallway installation displaying their work for all to see!

My Students

I teach 5th and 6th graders in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) course in which students "major," that is in addition to their curricular science class. I want my students to remain in our STEM programs and go forward having a strong foundation in what STEM Ed is about.

My students are scientists, creatives, innovators, disruptors, artists.

This year will be my second year with my 6th grade students and when I asked them what they would like to see differently this year from last year, their response was almost unanimous; They want to CREATE! My students like hands-on, applicable tasks that enlighten their worlds, satisfy their curiosities, and feed their creative energy. As scientists, we are inherently creative and need the space and materials that allow for creative expression of our studies.

My school provides an incredible environment for satisfying such desires, but our school sadly continues to face severe budget cuts. As teachers, we can only provide so much out of our own pockets.

My Project

As part of our Astronomical studies, students will choose a constellation out of the night sky. They will research their constellation's story along with the prominent star or stars of that constellation. They will choose LED lights to represent those major stars (i.e., A Red Giant, such as Betelgeuse out of Orion, would be represented by a red LED bulb). They will then be tasked with embroidering their constellation using the sewable electronics, including batteries, LED lights, and conductive thread, to make their research twinkle in our hall in an inspirational, educational installation while also navigating circuitry. Students will also write a "blurb" that tells their constellations' stories and introduces the main stars found within each. These embroidered hoops and constellation descriptions will be displayed in our hallway.

As a facilitator of artistic scientists, I am incredibly excited for this project.

I am asking for all the resources and materials including thread, needles, embroidery hoops, batteries, command hooks, LED lights so my students can complete their projects.
