NGSS, Here We Come!

My students need lab materials to learn some of the new NGSS curriculum we will be trying out this year. Some of the new topics we will cover include fossil records, electromagnetic forces, and force fields.

My Students

My students generally come from a high socioeconomic background so they are not lacking in opportunity. The challenge with my students is coming up with something new and innovative to capture their attention, inspire them, and push them to the next level. My students want to know how science relates to their lives. They are teens and by nature of their developmental level, they crave interaction and a way to fit concepts into their own experiences. I find this age level to be uniquely suited to project-based learning and peer collaboration. The students are fun to be around, positive, and able to be inspired.

My Project

The new NGSS curriculum is all about hands-on activities that students can relate to and see their applications in the real world. Many of these new lessons we will be teaching requires lots of materials and cost quite a bit to conduct for a class of over 30 students.

For some of the new standards such as electromagnetic force and force fields, my students will need materials such as copper wire, batteries, clay, magnets, and sand paper to be able to build products that can demonstrate how forces can create power to make something move.

The materials that include toy dinosaurs, shells, corn syrup, Jenga blocks, and disposable plastic ware will be used for the students to better understand fossils and the geologic timeline of Earth. Learning how fossils were created over time and how long the process takes will definitely open their eyes to see that the Earth has been around for a long time even if humans have not.

With your help we can give all my students an opportunity to learn about topics in geology, biology, physics, and astronomy in a way that is more engaging and creative. When students see how science can relate to their own lives, it gives them a connection that will last throughout their schooling and maybe even their lives!
