Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are mostly from low-income families and most receive free or reduced lunch. They are about a quarter way through a 30 book challenge. They struggle with reading, and do whatever they can to avoid it.
Some of my students need more engaging material to pique their interest in reading.
Reading comprehension is truly a challenge for them.
Many do not have access or the desire to keep up on what is happening in the world. If we want our children to be informed and participate in civic engagement, they need current news in a format they understand.
My Project
As the next step in developing readers, Time For Kids Magazine provides current world news in a format perfect for sixth graders. TFK provides interesting news stories as well as quiz and comprehension practice. The online portion provides free additional informational videos.
My goal is to encourage civic engagement, and reading about current events in a level and style that engages my students goes a long way toward that goal.
My students don't regularly pay attention to news, most say they either don't watch the news or they get it from YouTube or social media. Time for Kids provides interesting news stories that vary in length and the graphics are perfect for my students.
