My Students
The scale of our solar system is nearly impossible to conceptualize without framing. How long did it take for our sun to become the resource it is now? ...For Earth to become a home for life as we know it? ...For humans to emerge as the dominant form of life? How do we describe the size?
Our students are amazing minds, sorting through, connecting, and questioning.
They are active and playful with science concepts. We are building of culture of being a "science school for the community", meeting the students where they are and building their science literacy to prepare them for access to science, technology, engineering, and math majors in college. The student population is coming from the poorest congressional district in the United States, all eligible for free meals. But in the science classroom, in the framework of our science courses, we are able to bring a wealth of local resources New York City has to offer.
My Project
My students need materials for creating vibrant and detailed presentation boards such as scissors, markers and poster board. The Science Team, from 9th through 12th grade, Regents to AP courses, are all looking to unify around a pair of Next Generation Science Standards as a thread connecting Living Environment (Biology), Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, and AP Environmental Science. Students will create "museum installments" using the theme of scale and modeling. Our school hallways will be a series of exhibits around the theme. In addition, the project will include a trip to the American Museum of Natural History to collect information and see the theme in action.
With bright paper, scissors, glue, and poster board, our classes will explore an aspect of scale and modeling and make a presentation to transform our bulletin boards into displays of exemplar student work, student understanding, and conversation pieces for students, staff, and community.
The donations of these supplies with enrich our school community while providing students the materials to display their understanding in a way that shows the vertical approach to meeting standards and model making generalizations.
Students will have the unique opportunity to have a conversation from different content strands about the same standard of understanding. They will explore a big idea in ways that can make it click, no matter their science preference.
