Newsworthy Nonfiction

My students need three nonfiction magazines that will keep their interest and promote meaningful discussions.

My Students

"Open your textbook to page 33," is not the most exciting thing a student wants to hear in science class. They want visually stimulating material that has current, interesting information.

Many of my students come to class with a plethora of background knowledge, thanks to cable stations such as Discovery Channel.

We are fortunate enough in class to have received videos from other Donors Choose grants for Bill Nye and Planet Earth DVDs. With nonfiction reading being the big focus currently, my students also need to be able to process information in print.

My Project

I am requesting several, Scholastic magazine publications. The science magazine would be used to enhance the National Geographic textbooks we just adopted. The math magazine will bring in the needed reading practice during math class. The social studies magazine will be used during our "enrichment" period, to give additional support in dissecting nonfiction reading material.

With your donation, the students will be excited to read about new discoveries in science through these Scholastic publications.

Hopefully, they will then go home and share this information and open the home-school dialog.
