Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Again, Louisiana is not a continent guys. I teach 3rd grade (all subjects)in a low income community in Louisiana. I am the inclusion teacher for my grade level. This means that Special Ed. students are mainstreamed into my regular education classroom. The only equipment I have in my classroom is desks, chairs, chalkboards, and text books.

I have 26 students in a very small classroom. I want my students to be independent learners and really feel that they can learn from their classmates. Collaborative learning is a big piece of my classroom. Everyday students work in groups and with partners. A challenge that we face in my class is that there isn't many options for students to work at besides their desks. I don't have a carpet for them to use or even a kidney table. So students sit and work at their desks all day long. We take 5 minute stretch breaks throughout the day to get the blood moving but this isn't enough.

If I had a nice big beautiful carpet to sit on, things would definitely change. My students could come to the carpet for a whole group lesson, they could have another space to complete a center, and they could have a space to comfortably read during DEAR time. It would give me a place to work with my small groups, because I do not have a kidney table in my room, as well. When we started going over geography in Social Studies many of my students thought that Louisiana was a continent, it took about a week for everyone to understand the difference between a state and a continent. I know that if I had a class carpet that showed a map of the U.S. and all 50 states then it would serve as a constant reinforcement of this lesson. I could create geography centers around my class carpet. How fun would that be?!

My students knew how bad I wanted a class carpet but couldn't afford one, so they started coming up with ideas of their own. "What if we each brought our own newspaper to sit on? Then we won't get cold from the tile floor!" Not a bad idea, I'll use the newspapers as a last resort though. This carpet will not not only help my students academically but it will also show them how much people care about their education and want them to succeed.
