This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
It is important that families know what is happening in their school library throughout the year. Whether we are hosting author events, book reading challenges, library card sign-ups, public library events, or just talking books - caregivers need to know what our school library has to offer them and their children.
Every year I send out newsletters, but I am fearful not all families can access the content.
The Smore newsletter yearly subscription, with the translation tool, allows readers to click on a button that translates the entire newsletter in their preferred language. This way, all families will have equitable access to ongoing events happening during the school year.
This newsletter also allows for unlimited newsletters throughout the year. Right now, with the free educator subscription, I can only post three newsletters with very limited settings. More newsletters, means more connections with students' families. Getting families more connected to our school strengthens the home to school relationship and helps our students succeed.
With 20 percent of the student body dual language learners, I know many caregivers struggle to read the library newsletter. The Smore newsletter, with the translation tool, will enable equal access to the library newsletter for all our families.
As an educator, with dual language parents, I am also aware that many English-speaking students have caregivers and extended family members that are not native English speakers, and this newsletter upgrade is for those caregivers too. When everyone can read the newsletter, more families can be involved in their students' academic journeys.
