Newsflash: 6th Grade Students Become Expert Interviewers!

My students need tape recorders, batteries and a charger which will allow them to practice conducting and transcribing interviews as part of our nonfiction unit.

My Students

"Interview someone relevant to your research topic, but not someone you already know." These directions are first seen as intimidating but eventually become an exciting challenge for my brave 6th grade students, as part of their nonfiction project.

My 6th grade ELA students are simply the BEST.

They are motivated, creative and energetic. Our school has an admission test, so rather than being a neighborhood school, my students come from all boroughs of New York City. My students come from a variety of backgrounds but are eager to learn and make connections. Often, students will come to me on a Monday and say "I was thinking about what we learned in class last week over the weekend because something I just read/saw/heard reminded me of it..." Working with this population makes my job thrilling and challenging.

My Project

One of my favorite projects is our nonfiction project. It is a great chance for students to explore any topic which interests them. Projects have ranged from "Russian-Jewish Immigration to America" to "The Eiffel Tower" to "Jonas Salk." For many students, it is the first time they have had complete freedom to choose a topic for a major project. However, instead of writing a research paper, students use more creative ways to approach the topic. We study different types of poetry and students write poems about their topics. Students learn how to use our school's databases and research their topics. The most exciting and new element of the project, though, is the chance to conduct and interview with someone relevant to their topic. While we discuss good interview questions and general interview strategies, having tape recorders would enable students to actually practice the interview and transcription process.

The interview is the highlight of this nonfiction project.

Students have a great opportunity to work on the social skills necessary to have a focused, mature conversation with an adult. Tape recorders would really help me support the learning process in my classroom and help students to gain confidence as interviewers.
