My Students

Imagine coming to school in the United States without any prior schooling or knowledge of the English language. Even though my students have not been in a school setting before, these newcomer and migrant students are so curious and capable of learning sophisticated topics! I am a newcomer teacher for students in our rural town of Indiana.

My students are in the English as a second language (ESL) program in grades 2-6.

These students are recent immigrants to Indiana who have little or no English proficiency and who may have had limited formal education in their native countries.

In my classroom, we are learning to read and speak English.

Our northern Indiana school has a 74% free and reduced-price lunch. About 48% of our students are identified as English as a second language students. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best.

My Project

My newcomer and migrant students are so curious and capable of learning sophisticated topics! I am a newcomer teacher for students in our rural town of Indiana.

I teach over 60 newcomers in grades 2-6 to learn to read, write, and speak the English language.

My Project

The goal of the newcomer program at my school is to establish a bridge between newcomer needs and existing language support systems. My job is to help the students develop English language skills and acclimate to U.S. schools.

These materials will help my newcomer students learn to read and write in English in a fun and hands-on way.

These centers will allow my students to work with the language arts materials independently or with a classmate. Working with their classmates will lower my students' affective filter and help to build their English social and academic language.

This project will help our newcomers feel engaged in the classroom and decrease the stress and anxiety they may feel from being in an unfamiliar school setting.
