Imagine walking into a school/class where no one speaks your language and you can't understand anyone. That is what my students face everyday.
I teach non-English speaking students in MN.
My classroom is known as the "Newcomer Center." It is here that students spend the first year of their life in America. Their only job is to learn enough English to survive in an English-speaking classroom and world. We practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. This environment "protects" them from the stresses of the academic rigor of the regular mainstream classroom. They are given the tools and time to necessary to acquire their new language.
My Project
A listening library would provide an opportunity for my students to hear and read along with English text. Students would independently choose a book on CD (with the corresponding text) and listen to that book while I am engaged in small group learning with other students. These books are engaging and exciting. They are also books they will see when they go into their mainstream classroom. They will have had experience with them and will be able to share with their classmates and teachers from these books.
This project is near and dear to my heart as I want my students surrounded by an English rich environment.
It will provide them with one more tool to make the transition into their new country and language more successful.
