New Years Resolution: Organize Our Special Ed Classroom!

My Students

Like for all other school children, each day in our classroom includes a mix of learning and play. But, my students are very unique people.

Our school is home to about three hundred students in a high poverty, inner city neighborhood.

Our school is highly mobile with almost 20% of our students experiencing homelessness. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredibly resilient. The students that learn in my classroom range in age from Kindergarten to 2nd grade and all have low incidence disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Their vivacious personalities, zest for life, and boldness are a huge part of our school culture. They do not let developmental delays or poverty get in the way of their learning. I truly LOVE my job as their teacher and cannot imagine teaching a different group of children. My students need a very structured and predictable day to assist them in being as independent and successful as possible. Admittedly, organization is NOT this teacher's strong suit!

My Project

We need more organizational materials, such as a Roll & Store Bin organizer, Classroom Carry-All caddy, a mobile file cabinet, a tabletop communications center for classroom mailboxes, and storage boxes to keep our supplies organized. Currently, my students do not have a place to put their daily folders, art projects, graded work, and home communication notes. Having student "mailboxes" will allow for each student to have a place for their belongings, and to develop their independence in taking care of their items.

The more organized our classroom materials are, the more likely it is that my students will function independently around the classroom.

After all, gaining independence is a huge part of school for these little learners. My students are READY develop their independence, but we need support to gain the right materials to get there. Please help us organize our classroom so that my learners can reach their goals!
