This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is going through a great deal of changes and building student morale is a big priority this year. Students need to feel included in the school and yearbook will be a big step in the right direction. We currently do no have a yearbook and this will go a long way towards our goal.

Our school is located in California in an urban and low socioeconomic status neighborhood.

We have the same struggles of most urban schools in California of raising our test scores while educating a population that are second language learners. The students face many challenges, but my students meet them head on. My students want to attend college and be able to help out their families, but they need to have help and motivation to achieve these goals.

My Project

My students need two cameras to start a yearbook class at our school. As this is our first year of yearbook in many years and my first yearbook as well in any capacity, we have a dearth of supplies at our disposal. One of the essential aspects of the yearbook are photos and we are looking to start out with some basic cameras to help students learn how to take and frame photos for the book. We do not have a photography class at the school, so currently we would have to borrow cameras from other areas. It would really be of great assistance to have dedicated cameras that the students would at their disposal every day.

As mentioned above, my school has not had a yearbook previously and this is my first foray as well.

I volunteered to take on yearbook as a way to give students a new outlet to express themselves, gain computer and layout skills, instill pride in their school and perhaps most importantly give all students more activities throughout the school year. Presently, students are not included in decision-making on campus and have hardly any school pride, our yearbook will go a long way to remedy this.
