This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After surviving my first year of teaching, I am already thinking about my next batch of pre-kindergarten scholars. I haven't met them yet, but I definitely know what they will need from day one!

100% of the students in my class receive free lunch.

Almost all of my students are first or second generation Americans. The greatest challenge that they face is a language barrier, but we are lucky to have a translator on site to help parents get accustomed to the school systems. Since I have the privilege of teaching students in their first year of school, I know my job is set up high expectations that they will carry throughout the rest of their academic careers. Luckily for me, my students love school--maybe too much. They ask to come in on the weekends, cry when it's time to leave school, and ask me to come visit their houses, (which I love to do!). My students face challenges every day while living in poverty and a bilingual world, but they are the happiest, most passionate group of kiddos around!

My Project

Thinking back, I don't know how I survived last year without the following: We need a pencil sharpener that fits the fat pre-kindergarten pencils. We need a laminator and laminating sheets to protect projects, activities, and student work for years to come. We need a date stamper to save valuable teaching time when our 24 (times two) students are making projects. We need moldable sand to fill our sensory table for students to mold, build, and write with their strengthened fingers. We need an A-frame to post translated announcements to parents. We need heavy-duty plastic and clips to cover the tables we eat lunch at in our classroom for the endless messy activities we do, like baking and finger painting. We need sticky tack to hang awesome student work without damaging it. Finally, we need window paint because, well, my students will LOVE writing practice on the windows, (and so will their parents since they can see it from outside!).

The unity behind these items is that they should last for years of use, or in other words, for hundreds of students.

All year long I have been compiling a list of things that would make the classroom systems more efficient from day one, and here it is!
