Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Title 1 school is unique because the majority of our students are second language learners. Many of them are refugees from countries that are riddled with poverty, violence, and prosecution. Our neighborhood is one that struggles with poverty and hunger. 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. We also partner with Feeding America to bring groceries to the families twice a month.

Despite the obstacles facing these students and their community, they are determined, intelligent and eager to succeed.

We have a wonderful opportunity to learn about many different cultures and languages. The students develop a respect for one another that is built on trust and friendships.

My Project

As we near the end of the school year, my mind begins to race thinking of all the things I need to buy, replace, and wish for. My school is allotted a very limited budget of $250 per classroom for the year. We are not able to ask parents for supplies because of their financial status. Therefore, many things are purchased by myself, or gone without.

I realized the other day that my white boards were around as long as I have been teaching (15 years)!

They are warped, stained, and in pretty bad shape. I am asking for a new set of white boards that my students will use multiple times every day. I am also requesting some refills for the bean bags I have that were once comfy and nice.

Then there are the things that I could surely teach without. However, my experiences have taught me that the environment does make a difference! I like my students to be comfortable while learning. I allow them to lay, sit, and relax while doing there work and have found this method creates happier students. Next school year I would like to try rocking scoop chairs for my students to use throughout out the room. I also am requesting a set of stools for them to use. These will allow them the choice of flexible seating if desired. Other supplies are basic essentials for setting up a classroom. These include fadeless paper, borders, and letters for bulletin boards. Also labels for folders, pencil boxes, and field trips, that I usually buy from my own pocket to set up the classroom.
