I teach in the inner city of Detroit where most of my students are below the poverty line. My students live in hectic homes, and school is the one place they can go for consistency sometimes. I want them to grow as much as they can and will always find a way to get them the materials they need to be successful. All of my students are a grade or two below grade level in reading.
We have a lot to work on, but I know my students are very capable.
We will be returning face-to-face in the Fall. With so many kids missing so much of kindergarten and first grade, we are going to have a lot to do.
My Project
I am always looking for ways to keep my students engaged in learning. I want my students to practice reading books that do not have words to help them build necessary skills such as drawing inferences. These books will be introduced at the beginning of the school year, and students will have access to them during independent reading time.
Students deserve to enjoy reading books they want to read as opposed to books they have to read.
This will help my students grow as readers because the more they enjoy reading, the more they will be doing it on their own.
