My students need the titles that they have requested: continuations of manga series, teen romance novels, and psychology books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am lucky enough to work with incredibly intelligent, witty, and resilient teenagers from all over the Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. My students attend six different high schools within a large high school campus in the Bronx. Unfortunately, over the past few years, student library usage had decreased.
As the new campus librarian for the 4,300+ students who share the building, my goal is to change that!
In my last school, I worked with colleagues and students to make our school library one of the most popular and welcoming spaces in the building. I'm eager to build my new-to-me campus library into a similar space, where students are excited to find out what's new, check out culturally relevant and diverse books, learn about the world around them, spend time with peers, and explore their creativity.
So far, so good!
My Project
Many of my students are having their first experiences with a student-centered library that caters to their needs, interests, and wants. All students' fines from previous schools and librarians have been waived; book borrowing limits have been increased; students are regularly offered totebags to carry home their reading selection; and students have been invited to provide input on which books should be in the library's collection.
As a result, library circulation is up by 168% over 2012, which was the year which had the highest circulation in the past six years.
Students have requested list upon list of graphic novels, manga, teen romance reads, and non-fiction titles like books about psychology. Providing students with the books that they want to read will help to create and retain life-long readers.
