This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in one of the poorest congressional districts also known as the “hungriest zip code” in the country. However, in 2020, our school was ranked the top 6-12 school in all five boroughs of New York for the third year in a row! There are vast reasons for my students' success such as data-driven Instruction, individually tracking the progress of each student, and the development of Interventions to meet the needs of every student.

As educators, it is important to be supportive of all students and support them beyond the classroom.

Sometimes the solution to improving student attendance and engagement can be as simple as offering students something beyond the classroom, especially for those serving low-income populations. Many at-risk students from low-income homes often do not have regular access to clean clothes, drawing unwanted attention, and ridicule from classmates.

My students will stay at home if their uniform is dirty. Therefore, providing students and families with laundry essentials is important to me and has become a problem that interferes with their education. Ultimately, supporting this project of laundry essentials will help build community. I will also be able to take students' clothes home and wash them as needed.

For example, if students do not have clean clothes, they will not attend school resulting in chronic absenteeism. Attendance and student achievement go hand-in-hand and can impede a child’s ability to succeed.

We know that if students do not have the necessary things, it interferes with their learning. There are biological requirements for human survival, such as food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, and sleep. If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs considered physiological needs the most important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs are met.
