My Students
We are a junior high school located on the north side of Indianapolis. There are about 1000 seventh and eighth graders in our school. We have a diverse group of students. My French 1 students have to sit all day and they need the chance to move about. With desks in my room, it is very difficult to move. I also have read a lot about deskless classrooms and decided to take the plunge.
One of my professors once said that the mind stops working when the bottom starts hurting.
One of the goals of our school is to help all students find success. I'm trying to meet the needs of my students who need a change from traditional seating. My students are eager to learn and I want to help them achieve all they want to.
Any help I can get to make this happen will be greatly appreciated.

My Project
I'm changing my seating arrangement for 2019-2020. I'm going to a deskless classroom. A local carpet company has graciously donated carpet squares to me already. I'm looking for new or gently used beanbag seats, gaming chairs or other comfortable seating items to use in my classroom. I'm going to purchase clipboards so students have a sturdy surface to write on. I plan on using the chairs that are in my room to come up with alternative seating options. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I hope that by changing things up, I will spark new interest in learning and be able to keep their attention better.
I'm choosing to change my seating arrangements to stimulate more student-to-student communication. I also will have different stations set-up for reading and collaborative work. With these changes and a shift to comprehensible input led instruction, my outcome goals for students is higher proficiency in French. By adjusting how they are seated and how they interact, I will strive to maintain 90% in the target language in class.
