This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.
My Project
My AP and IB students are required to learn and process a lot of content and skills throughout their course in preparation for the IB and AP examinations. Most of these projects and studies fall in two categories: empirical data collection via labs or experiments and secondly, artistic, content based projects that tap their creative, academic and artistic side. And to broaden and add to their wealth of knowledge, I began building a classroom library to which we have added title after title, in small bathes to facilitate exploration and reading. However, we also need to stay current in a world where scientific discoveries happen daily. With subscriptions to these requested magazines, students will have a chance to explore current science topics and the outdoors. Students come back having read these titles in their small groups and present their information, sparking conversation, debate and allow others' curiosity to be tapped. Students create presentations and even Socratic seminars around the books.
Thanks to you and your generosity, students will be given the chance to add a few more magazine titles to open their minds, their perspectives and feed their curiosity beyond the textbook.
