My Students
My school is located in a high-need community in New York City. All of the students are diagnosed as autistic. The children in the class are low functioning than their peers. Most of them are limited in their speech and language skills.
My Project
From March 23, 2020 to August 31, 2020, New York City schools were closed and all the instructions were turning to emote learning as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic. For the School Year 2020-2021, some students were learning in person and some students were learning remotely. It was difficult for the students, parents and teachers to adjust to the new and uncertainty challenges. Our autistic students were so vulnerable to the Coronavirus Pandemic and a lot of them had learning loss. Finally, we are going to return to school for the next School Year 2021-2022. As their classroom teacher, I would like to have my classroom as clean as possible so that our students can learn in a safe, clean and healthy environment. In order to achieve this goal, we need a lot of cleaning supplies. For the previous years, I relied on the kindness of the parents to help to buy some cleaning supplies for the classroom. However, requesting cleaning supplies from the parents during this ongoing pandemic period may create more stress for the family.
Coronavirus pandemic has been impacting our students in all aspects; especially the social-emotional domain.
A lot of students with autism have low frustration tolerance and fidget toys are effective for the students to reduce their anxiety and stress. However, the fidget toys in the classroom are old, dirty, and torn. Replacing the old fidget toys in the classroom will be a great way to help our students to feel calm and safe emotionally when they resume school in person.
In conclusion, some cleaning supplies and fidget toys would provide a tremendous change and help to our autistic students to start a new, clean, and healthy “Normal” school year!
