it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how many legs a spider has? Did you know that a there are different types of clouds? Do you know that ants are really strong? These are some of the questions that my excited students ask after they read informational books. They are so enthusiastic to learn about the world around them!
My students are inquisitive and amazing.
They are curious about our world and LOVE asking questions! All of my students receive free lunch and eighty percent are English Language Learners. Despite hardships that are out of their own control (poverty, violence, drug/alcohol abuse), they come to school like any 1st grader should - excited.
My Project
Books at a student's independent reading level are vital in any classroom. Students need books that they can read on their own to better promote comprehension and fluency. When reading a book at their appropriate level, they are able to focus more on comprehension, rather than decoding. When a student can read a book that's "just right," reading is fun and accessible.
In my years teaching first grade, I've noticed that students naturally gravitate to the science-related books. They are so interested in learning about nature and animals. These non-fiction guided reading books allow students to have control over their learning. They get to pick what they learn (read) about!
Simply, first graders love to read and first graders love learning and then sharing the information that they read.
Non-fiction books help students make the connection between reading and learning new information. No books do it better than informational books - If you read, you can learn.
