New Orleans Post-Katrina Mural Project

After teaching art in New Orleans public schools for over fifteen years the London Avenue Canal broke and flooded my former school, decimating the neighborhood, scattering my students to all parts of the country. In view of the hard hit our community took, I never thought I would have the opportunity to teach in New Orleans again. Yet I now find myself incredibly blessed in being hired at one of the first group of schools to reopen here. My personal background is in painting. To their credit, the administration suggested I oversee a mural painting project with my gifted art students . This would undoubtedly be a cathartic (but expensive) experience for us all. I am working with twelve young men and women this semester, but there are more students with IEP's who can be scheduled for art next year. In preparation, I suggested that they base sketches for the mural on their particular experience in regards to the hurricane. So far we have three possible drawings ready to execute. I also work at two elementary schools which may be able to benefit from any leftover mural supplies. Unfortunately, there is currently no money available for the art program. We need masonry primer, assorted colors of (sax true flow) acrylic mural paint, gesso, graphite sticks, acrylic medium as a varnish and nylon and synthetic brushes. I am willing to purchase the masonry primer out-of pocket so that we may at least begin the project before this school year is over. I hope some one can facilitate this project. Thank you for giving us this venue to ask for funding.
