My Students

I teach middle school band in a very culturally diverse and low socioeconomic community. My students come from so many walks of life, and they are brought together by the communal effort of learning to play an instrument and perform as a group. For many, Band is a safe haven and a place they know they will be successful. It is also a place where many thrive even when they struggle in other ways in the building.

My band students meet daily for class instruction and rehearsal time.

We work together as a band community and support one another in our musical learning!

My Project

In our band classroom, many of our shared supplies (like music stands, instrument maintenance materials, and percussion equipment) have seen their better day!

I tell my students that most of the music stands in our classroom are older than I am (jokes aside, they probably are!!).

The band room I inherited a few years ago was in pretty rough shape. Many of our music stands are pretty beat up from many, many years of use, the hardware has become loose and they don't stand up straight anymore. When we use them for concerts, they don't always look very pretty, either.

Having quality equipment in the room helps with morale. When the students have things that look nice, they work to keep the room looking nice too! And having a good music stand that isn't leaning, tipping over, or otherwise falling apart helps us maintain our quality rehearsal space and time!
