New Mexico Pueblo Elementary School Band Needs Supplies!
My students need reeds, valve oil, germicide, and other supplies for our new Band Program. Funding is limited, and we need to buy clarinet and saxophone reeds etc. for over 200 students.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Arnold's classroom raised $936
This project is fully funded
My Students
We just had 36 instruments loaned to our new elementary Band Program! Funding is scarce right now, and we will share those instruments between around 250 4th-5th grade students. Along with a LOT of mouthpiece sanitizer, we need clarinet reeds, trumpet valve oil, and many other accessories.
Keshi / Welcome to Halona Idiwana - our Middle Place - also known as Zuni Pueblo!
Zuni Pueblo is the largest of the nineteen New Mexican Pueblos, covering more than 700 square miles and with a population of over 10,000.
We are considered the most traditional of all the New Mexico Pueblos, with a unique language, culture, and history.
Our year is marked by a cycle of traditional ceremonial activities; the most sacred and perhaps the most recognized is the annual Sha'lak'o event.
An important part of our rich tradition is in Band music. The Zuni Pueblo Band is one of the few remaining tribal bands in the country. This tradition began in the 1920's when we began performing Sousa and other military marches in Christian mission schools.
At Dowa Yalanne School, we are creating a new wave of nearly 250 young musicians to carry on the Band music tradition. We are very grateful for your help!
My Project
We have a small number of Band instruments to share between over 200 students. This requires many clarinet reeds, saxophone reeds, and Sterisol germicide to clean instrument mouthpieces between classes.
We have begun weekly Band classes at Dowa Yalanne, which will help to make our school and our entire district eligible for a Vh1 Save the Music award in 2014.
In recent decades, budget cuts and the economy have weakened the music program in our schools. The once-proud Zuni HS Band was 300 strong in 1979, and now has 16 students.
Using loaned instruments, we are sharing 36 Band instruments between the entire 4th and 5th grade (and some 3rd graders as well), and plan to flood the middle school with talented young musicians for years to come to build up the band program once again to its former glory.
Please help us buy supplies for our Band Program!
Instrumental Music programs have many measurable and dramatic positive effects on students.
In a recent survey, University of California Irvine did extensive research on the effects of daily music in the curriculum and student learning. An 80% improvement in logical reasoning spatial skills in students learning to read and play music on instruments can easily create a jump of more than 20% in standardized math scores.
