Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most prekindergartens have a fully stocked dramatic play center with pretend food, dishes, dress-up costumes, baby dolls, and lots of other things the kids can use to carry out the ideas they want to act out. My students do not. Most of them probably don't have these kinds of toys at home either.

My Pre-K students are a great bunch of kids!

They are just starting out in school and they are so excited to come to school every day. As their teacher, I try to maintain that excitement about school so that they will always love coming to school. My school is a Title 1 school and most of my students come from very low-income families. They are content with what we have in our classroom but I just know that they would be so much more excited if there was a complete set of nice toys for them to play with in the dramatic play center. Since most of them don't have many toys at home, our center time is the most exciting part of their day. During center time, they can choose to play in any center of the class and right now they can't even play in the house area because it has nothing for them to play with.

My Project

With new toys in our dramatic play center, my students will be able to act out all kinds of scenarios. The kitchen set we have now is old and musty with nothing in it. If they had a new kitchen set with pretend food and cookware they would be able to use their imaginations and create all types of meals for each other. They are so creative and I'm sure that they will come up with all kinds of scenarios to act out with their new dramatic play items. They also love playing with Mr. Potato Head but the one we have now is so old and it is missing lots of pieces. They would be so excited to play with a new one. Having new toys to play with will give them something extra to look forward to and another reason for them to love coming to school.

Dramatic play is so important for young children.

They learn so much through trying on different roles and they develop so many skills at the same time. They practice their language skills as they talk about their ideas with their friends. They use abstract thinking to come up with new situations and problem solving skills to solve dilemmas. They also practice their social skills as they negotiate who will be the Dad and who will be the Mom. They really do learn so much through dramatic play!
