This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you first learned to read? The excitement of a new book. The thrill of recognizing words on a page.
My students are the United Nations.
I have 25 students in Kindergarten who are from all over the world. My school is located in Queens, New York in an area that welcomes immigrant populations from all over the world.
We are a Title One school which means we are considered to be below the poverty line and all my children qualify for either free or reduced price lunch.
I have taught third and fourth grade for the last seventeen years. This year I am moving to kindergarten and I am very excited. My excitement was dampened only a bit when I went into my new classroom last week and saw only furniture and no supplies.
My classroom was created to accommodate the large number of new students coming into our school.
Budgets in NYC have been cut to the bone and I am not hopeful that I will have what I need for my students.
My Project
I am asking for sets of Leveled Books for kindergarten. Leveled books provide age appropriate books targeted to support my students' reading abilities.
Many of my students are English language learners and many have never been in school before.
I want to make their kindergarten experience as wonderful and exciting as those kindergartens in more affluent communities where students have the best of everything.
Having these books in my library will give my students opportunities to find the "just right" book for their individual abilities.
My families are all hard working and want their children to have the best education available because they know that education unlocks doors.
I want my students to have the tools they need to succeed in learning to read. Books are one of the most important tools that students can have in any grade but particularly in kindergarten where children are just beginning to unwrap the wonders of reading.
Please consider my kindergarten worthy.
