Help me give my students these novels in order to build empathy for others, engage in meaningful conversations with family and friends, and expand their vocabulary.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach students who are creative, humorous, inquisitive, compassionate, and enthusiastic learners. They are constantly seeking new engaging material to read and challenge their thinking, and I would love the chance to give my students new and entertaining young adult literature that they can relate to.
Books are so important because they allow students to venture into the footsteps of someone else, live for a moment in a magical mystical world full of fictitious creatures, or travel to places or in history to learn about others around the world in order to create empathy and empower our students for a better future.
Having a classroom set of diversified and new books is an essential resource for my students because I teach in a school with a diverse student population. With all the distractors among teenagers, I want to help continue the love of reading by providing the next great book in my classroom.
My Project
These works of fiction will be added into our curriculum and to the growing classroom library. The titles I selected will add diversity to my curriculum and hopefully encourage any reluctant readers to read more. Allowing students more choices and increasing the diversity of authors will foster student engagement.
While focusing on my reluctant readers, these novels will give them a fresh take on topics/characters that relate to them and their world.
All my students will be given time in class to read their novel silently. I will hold conferences with groups of students to tell me about their novel. Students will meet periodically in groups to discuss the thematic concepts. Later, students will research published central themes that connect thematically to their novels. Their final product of the novel will be an independently written paper exploring the themes they discussed in their groups.
