I am a technology teacher in East Flatbush, New York in a public elementary school. The area where I teach is a low-income area. We feel very strongly about building relationships with our students, parents and within the community because our students have many challenges facing them in their homes, and in their community.
My problem is the teacher's computer in the technology lab is extremely old. The newer computers are designated for students' use. As a result of using this computer it is difficult to direct my students to various web sites because my computer is extremely slow and prone to crashing. It would be beneficial for my students to get a newer teacher's computer in order to improve instruction.
My students will benefit from this new computer because I will be able to model using the computer. For example, instructing by showing Power Point presentations. Unfortunately now using the current computer it is slow and frequently freezes. it is not stable enough to plan for this type of activity. I am also unable to display the Internet on the smart boards using my computer because again the computer is slow and frequently crashes.
I would like to give my students the opportunity to participate in Internet workshops, Internet Projects and Web Quests. Their education will benefited from these activities because they not only incorporate the curriculum areas but technology. I would also like to mention how much my students enjoy working on the computers. Adding these activities to their daily work would not only be educational but pleasurable too.
