My Students

In the school that I teach in, 57% of the students are Asian, 19% are Latino, and 17% are White. In an effort to build inclusive classrooms and foster a generation where love is chosen over hate, I am working to build a classroom library that works to be windows into other people's lives and mirrors to reflect their own. Books and reading materials are crucial, practical tools that enable teachers to bring more of the world to their kids and help them develop kindness and empathy for the people around them.

My fourth grade class inspires me every day!

Many of my students come from immigrant parents, speak more than one language, and live in multi-generational households... and they love to read. Please help my students have a wonderful school experience by donating today.

My Project

In our school we prioritize being an inclusive community. In an effort to learn more about the deaf community we have been learning American Sign Language in Class. Many different languages are spoken in our diverse classroom but, we wanted to learn another language collectively as a class.

Did you know, "ASL is the third most popular language in the US behind English, Spanish and Chinese.

ASL is the fourth most widely used language in the US with around 2 million users." In an effort to increase windows and mirrors in our classroom, I want to make an impact that can give my students the opportunity to imagine new places, learn new languages, explore new foods and cultures. I also want to give them the voice of communicating through their hands.

"American Sign Language is a viѕuаl, gеѕturаl lаnguаgе, which means that it iѕ еxрrеѕѕеd via thе hands and face, аnd реrсеivеd thrоugh thе еуеѕ." Sign language provides the opportunity to communicate with individuals who are deaf, it will improve my students spelling skills as they are learning the letters but, more importantly learning American Sign Language brings my class together as one. These books, charts and graphs will help my students increase their awareness, learn about inclusivity, acceptance, and provided an opportunity learn about a culture and community that they are unfamiliar with.

During this time of the day, we are all beginners, learning something new, exploring another way that people communicate, we are closely looking at our classmates and friends. We see and sign together as we learn.
