My Students
Independent Reading Time is my class's favorite part of the day! They love to curl up with a good book and just get lost in world of their favorite characters. They get this love of reading from me--I tell my students all the time how a good book can change your world!
My students are a vibrant bunch of characters, who love school from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave.
They love to learn, all subjects, at any time of the day. They are such respectful, happy children.
I currently teach at a Title 1, high poverty, very crowded, elementary school on the North shore of Staten Island. Most of my students don't live near the school and travel on the school bus from other neighborhoods. Unfortunately, many of my students come from households where access to new books and resources is very scarce at home. Even a simple trip to the public library does not happen for some of my students. Some of my students come from families that speak little or no English. Some of my students are the only members of their family that speak English. My students really do try hard to overcome obstacles in their lives. Many of my students' family members work multiple jobs and don't have time to take them to the library.
My Project
I want my students to have a classroom library that is full of books that they can't wait to read! I am asking for a few sets of high-interest books that my kids will be so excited to read. During independent reading time, I want the kids to read these high quality books that will increase their comprehension, as well as their love of reading. I will admit, not EVERY child has a love of reading--but with books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Boxcar Children," my children will have an opportunity to find something they really enjoy reading.
I have received a few Donorschoose.org grants and each and every one has had such an impact on my students!
I wrote my first grant a few years ago, and my students are STILL utilizing the materials I received from that grant.
