In addition to English, the students in our school speak more than 10 other languages and represent many cultures. Nearly 84% of our students are designated as high needs. Our multilingual library supports their home language development which research proves will bolster their English language development as well.
This library shows our students that their home language skills are welcome and valued in our school; it helps them to feel proud of their home languages and cultures.
Access to books in their home languages helps students who are new to the country feel more comfortable in our school. Bilingual books provide a bridge between students' home languages and English. Having books in every student's home language allows our students to share the many assets they bring to our school with all of their teachers and classmates.
We began building this library at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year. Our students have been so excited to see books in their home languages! We are slowly growing this collection so that it continues to be representative of the students in our school. We have recently gotten some new students who speak Arabic and Portuguese and these books would make a wonderful addition to our current collection. The display bins will allow us to showcase our new books so that our students will be able to see the many wonderful choices. Sheet protectors will help us create a more effective checkout system for our books.
