My students need 50+ exciting fiction and non-fiction books, including books by Stephenie Meyer, Walter Dean Myers, Alan Lawrence Sitomer and Paul Langan.
My students are 9th graders who live in an impoverished area of New York. In our Humanities class, a combination of English and Social Studies, my students read three times a week to develop and improve their literacy skills. Good reading skills are necessary to succeed in high school and go to college. Many of the students in my classroom are reading below grade level and/or have learning disabilities. Currently, our library doesn't have enough books to support all of my students' needs.
My classroom is located in a high-need community and we have limited funding for improving classroom libraries. With more books for our library, my students would have greater choice and the possibility to read new and interesting books. Unfortunately, many of the books in our classroom library are outdated or just not interesting to my students. In addition, our school library is currently not functioning, which means that our classroom library is the main place students find books for reading.
My students need new and interesting books to read. These include the Twilight series, urban fiction, realistic fiction, as well as books about sports and life in high school. The new books will give my students the opportunity to read books that are engaging and help them to improve their reading skills.
Your support will make it possible for my students to read exciting books during independent reading. My students will be extremely grateful to receive new books for our classroom library and I know that if they have the opportunity to read these appealing books, they will develop better literacy skills.
