This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Every student loves a good game! My students are very creative and imaginative, and I would like to see them apply their awesome and unique ideas to make their very own prototype board games in a new course I created for our district: Engineering Principles in Non-Digital Board Game Design, which focuses on the iterative design process that includes receiving feedback from their peers and continually working to improve their design through testing.

One significant issue is that many students have never played a real strategy board game before, so having a variety of different board games to play in order to learn, experience and understand various game mechanics is vital to help my students brainstorm and construct their own ideas, so they can implement useful, thematic rules and strategies in the construction of their own board games.

Student engagement soars when they have agency to make their own decisions, and having them think about, create, design and modify a board game prototype is sure to have them working together towards a functioning game that they can all enjoy playing. Students can learn so much from playing other board games by looking at the visual aesthetics, reading how the rules are written/explained, engaging with various themes and thematic elements, etc. I am hoping that the more board games I can have my students play and explore, the more rich and expansive gaming elements they can incorporate into their own creations.
