My Students
There's a surge of energy that bustles around the room when it's time for reading. My students are thoroughly excited by the idea of becoming confident and enthusiastic readers. To be five and trying to learn to read is a difficult but rewarding job that my students are determined to succeed in. When they work in small groups, I find they are independent and focused but they are not always given attention grabbing materials.
My classroom is comprised of 17 students who come from low-income families and could use for more resources within the classroom.
Our school serves student in grades K-5 in the inner city; all of which are entitled to free lunch. Many of my students have come in with no prior education and are already below the standard that we expect them to be at; starting at such a disadvantage will only increase the gap that is keeping them from success. Inner city schools struggle to gain resources that other districts may have, inhibiting students from reaching their full potential. I want my students to be successful in life, so I want to give them opportunities to ensure they are engaged and excited learners.
My Project
Students are expected to be independent and focused during our small group and center time but without engaging materials it is very difficult for a five year old’s attention to stay in one place. My students are beginning to learn to read and it would be so beneficial for them to be able to have materials to work with that are well-made and fun. The materials that I am requesting would be utilized in my small group instruction as well as independent centers to allow my students an opportunity to practice building basic words, naming the first, medial, and ending sounds in words, sorting objects based on their phonemes, and reading books. Each material chosen was chosen with the intent to guide my students into becoming better readers. The phoneme instant centers, cvc word work centers, build-a-word, and the other materials chosen all enhance the learning of the above skills. Reading should be a fun part of the day, and with these centers that practice word building and phonological awareness my students will be gaining the necessary skills for them to be able to excel in reading.
Giving these Kindergarteners many resources to practice reading allots them an opportunity to enhance their skills that they don’t currently receive.
My students need the opportunity to practice different skills in multiple ways that will help to enhance their foundational skills in reading. With these center activities my students will be practicing first sounds, medial sounds, ending sounds, as well as building and reading basic words, which will help them on their journey to become fluent readers. By having more engaging materials to use in my instruction I am able to push them as learners to achieve more challenging tasks.
