This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I love my community. I have been a part of it for 10 years and hope for many more to come. This is where I began my teaching career so it is a special place to me. My kids are creative, understanding, and thoughtful.
When my students grow up I do not care if they remember content, I want them to remember how they felt while here.
I definitely remember 0 content from my middle school science teacher. I want them to remember feeling welcome, feeling curious and feeling awe at the world around us.
I feel like I am succeeding, I have students that have reached out to me to say that my class and the words I may have said in passing helped them grow a love for science. In some cases they said my class is the reason for their college major! Definitely a humbling experience and one I am proud to be a part of.
The MicroSnatoms and Molecular Models will help students take a complex, abstract science concept and demonstrate it in a hands on way. Students struggle with atomic bonding because it is not something they can see or handle - they have no experience with the vocabulary or concept. Even with videos and computer simulations many of our students are getting left behind. Our students, which include a high population of multi-lingual learners, will benefit from having a visual, tactile learning method.
So often in our classrooms students are stuck on screens for most of their learning day, this tool allows a much needed screen break increasing engagement and comprehension. It will show HOW our environments are interconnected both at the macro and atomic level.
