My Students

My students are juniors who want to challenge themselves, and they will be taking an Honors level course, which, for many of them, will be their first Honors class. I want to make the class as engaging as possible and incorporate literature with relevant texts, pushing them not only to engage in rigorous readings but to make the work highly engaging.

Our students are the forgotten kids: low-income students at a neighborhood school, students who are diverse learners, ELL students, immigrants from over 30 different countries, students at serious risk of dropping out.

Yet, despite these diverse factors, they all have one thing in common-- they are amazing.

This junior year Honors course is an important stepping stone for them-- it paves the way to a Dual Credit or Advanced Placement college-level course for them, but it can be daunting. With colleges placing more and more of an emphasis on independent thesis statements and text to text connections, I want to teach my students how to develop these skills before they ever leave our high school, and having engaging reading content is the key.

My Project

After making our way through Frankenstein, students will continue to grapple with questions that dystopian novels force us to face: when does technology advance our humanity, and when does technology strip us of our humanity? We will begin with one of the oldest dystopian novels ever written, Frankenstein, then delve into a contemporary one that asks the same question: In Never Let Me Go, we must face the consequences of creating a group of people whose only role in life is to serve as organ donors for others. Because bio-ethics and technology are issues our society must always face, this will give my students background to bring with them into a college-level course offered at our school, and eventually on college campuses themselves. And students learn the art of argument and persuasion by taking a stance on these critical issues, as well as learn how to synthesize multiple sources to present their own viewpoints.
