My students need graphic novels to encourage reading and promote literacy.

My Students
Do you remember how much you hated that history book you had to read in high school? Now, imagine that you can't read it and you can start to fathom where my kids spend their days.
We are a large urban high school.
Our free and reduced lunch population makes up more than 87% of our school. And far too many of my kids are struggling to read at an elementary school level. Many of our kids are hungry and homeless. Others are just waiting for what life will throw at them next and reading the text about how Hatshepsut ripped the throne from her ward's hands is just not high on their lists of priorities
My Project
I am working to increase the literacy of our school through the social studies department using graphic novels as the vehicles of change. I want my kids to see that reading does not have to be threatening and that history is full of superheros and intrigue.
I would love to build a library for our social studies department that would allow us to reach out to our kids.
I know that many people view graphic novels as comic books, but ANY reading comic books or cereal boxes or classic novels helps to develop the literacy our kids so desperately need for academic success. It will help them develop the skills they need to be successful in life.
