Dear Community of caring donors:
As a Reading Specialist and teacher of the High School Assessments, I work with almost every student that walks through our door. Part of my job is to make them want to be here and to become successful high school graduates. If I can’t do that, I have failed as a teacher. It’s just that simple.
That said, I need your help to provide some five hundred students with materials that will appeal to their level of interest and math skills, level of reading and comprehension, and promote the notion that they can and will succeed.
I need, at a minimum, fifty-five copies of two textbook supplements that I believe provide just that. The first one is Danica McKellar’s Kiss My Math” Showing Pre-Algebra Who’s Boss. The second one is Hot X: Algebra Exposed by Danica McKellar.
My Project
Why do I need both? Our students come to us with a variety of levels of skill and most need to be gently reminded of things they have forgotten or never learned in the first place. Why do I need these particular books? Even the most anti-math kid will open a book with a title such as these, and move through them fairly quickly because they speak to kids in language that is kid friendly. In other words, they remove the dreaded fear monster that underlies all past failure and pre-conceived notions that say such things as, “I can’t do math, and I just don’t get it.”
Please help me to help my kids achieve the potential that they really do have.
Don’t let them continue to give up before they’ve even had a change to start. Thank you for caring, and please know that anything you can do to promote this very tall order will be greatly appreciated.
