This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Covid impacted all our lives with an increase in isolation and a crucial shift in everyday functional interactions. My classroom supports students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and when this group of students returned to the classroom, they experienced Covid impacts in a deeper way. The main areas of need for this unique group is the ability to communicate, socially interact with others, and to access learning when they have difficulty understanding the world around them. I want to teach my students the ability to appropriately communicate with people to be able to learn how to have interactions with other humans and learn life skills through those experiences. In order to be able to teach these valuable skills, I require easel pads to provide visual learning and hands on collaboration, water bottles for my students to have access to hydration throughout the long school day, strip lights to provide a calm room through color light options, and many other items support physical needs students might have that must be met before the learning can happen. Other resources such as sensory items like fidgets and weighted objects are needed to keep different students who need sensory breaks have the ability to be interactive in a class and not be disruptive to themselves or others. Our classroom shares a lot of its resources with other special needs students and we tend to run out of basic items such as markers, pencils, and batteries for timers. One crucial item that supports positive behaviors are reward jars that are visible to students. Without those tools, students can't live an independent life. Our classroom is hands on, learning how to cook, clean, about hygiene, and much more.
